OVERVIEW

Understanding Laser Tattoo Removal

A tattoo can feel completely different years after it was originally chosen.

Sometimes the goal is complete removal.

Sometimes it is simply to fade the tattoo enough for a successful cover-up.

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering controlled light energy into tattoo pigment, breaking the ink into progressively smaller particles that the body can gradually clear over time.

The important word is gradually.

Tattoo removal is not a one-session treatment, and no responsible practitioner should promise that every tattoo will disappear completely.

Nanda begins by assessing the tattoo itself: its colours, size, density, age, location, depth, previous treatments and your individual skin.

With more than 25 years of experience across aesthetics and beauty, her focus is on creating a realistic removal or fading plan rather than selling a fixed number of sessions before your tattoo has even been assessed.

Black and darker pigments often respond differently from colours such as green, blue, yellow, red or white, and professionally applied tattoos can behave very differently from older or amateur tattoos.

For clients searching for laser tattoo removal in Glasgow, tattoo fading, tattoo removal for cover-ups or removal of unwanted tattoo ink, the consultation is where Nanda establishes what can realistically be achieved and how the treatment should be approached safely.

THE TREATMENT

How it works

Tattoo ink sits within deeper layers of the skin.

Laser tattoo removal uses controlled pulses of light that are preferentially absorbed by tattoo pigment.

This energy causes pigment particles to fragment into smaller pieces.

The body’s natural clearance processes then gradually remove some of these fragmented particles over the weeks following treatment.

Different tattoo colours absorb different wavelengths of light differently.

This is why some colours respond more readily than others and why the exact laser technology being used matters.

Nanda will assess:

  • Ink colour
  • Tattoo size
  • Ink density
  • Tattoo depth
  • Professional versus amateur tattooing
  • Age of the tattoo
  • Body location
  • Skin tone
  • Previous laser tattoo removal
  • Scarring within the tattoo
  • Whether the goal is removal or cover-up fading

The treatment plan is then built around those factors.
A tattoo should not be treated more aggressively simply to try to speed up removal.

The skin needs adequate recovery time between sessions.

YOUR APPOINTMENT

What to expect

our first appointment includes a detailed assessment of the tattoo and your skin.

Nanda will discuss why you want the tattoo removed and whether your goal is:

  • Maximum possible removal
  • Partial fading
  • Preparation for a new cover-up tattoo
  • Removal of selected sections of a tattoo

A test patch may be recommended before full treatment depending on the laser system, tattoo and individual skin.

During treatment, the laser is passed across the tattoo in controlled pulses.

Many clients describe the sensation as sharp heat, snapping or pinpricks against the skin.

Immediately afterwards, the area may appear red, swollen or temporarily whitened.

Minor pinpoint bleeding, tenderness or blistering can occur depending on the tattoo and treatment intensity.

Nanda will explain exactly how to protect the treated skin during recovery.

RESULTS + TIMELINE

A gradual, individual process

Tattoo fading happens gradually.

The tattoo may initially look different immediately after laser treatment, but the meaningful fading occurs over the following weeks as the body processes fragmented pigment.

Most tattoos require multiple treatment sessions.

The number of sessions varies substantially and is influenced by:

  • Tattoo colour
  • Ink density
  • Depth of pigment
  • Age of the tattoo
  • Professional or amateur application
  • Body location
  • Skin type
  • Individual immune response
  • Previous tattoo removal treatments

Sessions must also be appropriately spaced to allow the skin to recover and the body time to clear pigment.

Some tattoos fade significantly.

Some colours or pigments can be considerably more resistant.

Certain inks can also respond unpredictably.

Nanda will reassess the tattoo after each stage rather than making unrealistic promises about complete removal from the outset.

SUITABILITY

Is Laser Tattoo Removal right for you?

Laser tattoo removal may be suitable if you:

  • No longer want an existing tattoo
  • Want to fade a tattoo for a cover-up
  • Have an old tattoo that you would like progressively lightened
  • Want selected sections of a tattoo reduced
  • Understand that multiple sessions are normally required
  • Have realistic expectations about the degree of clearance possible

A consultation is particularly important because tattoo removal is not simply about the tattoo.

Your skin tone and the contrast between your skin and the tattoo pigment influence treatment planning.

Nanda will also consider any history of:

  • Abnormal scarring
  • Keloid formation
  • Pigment changes
  • Skin conditions
  • Recent sun exposure or tanning
  • Previous laser treatment
  • Medication affecting healing or light sensitivity

Not every tattoo is suitable for aggressive treatment, and some pigments may be difficult or impossible to fully remove.

The consultation is therefore used to set realistic expectations before you commit to a course.
